St. Augustine - Dr Balchandra Sharma
Dr Sharma believes that a vibrant health and education sector is vital for the creation of sound minds for progressive and sustainable communities throughout Trinidad and Tobago. A consummate professional and academic, Bose earned his undergraduate (BSc.-Hons) in Optometry and post-graduate degrees in Vision Research (MSc), specialising in contact lens applications (DCLP), and Comparative Religion and Politics (PhD). He has lectured in the UK, Hong Kong, India and Japan and is presently coordinating and lecturing on the new optometry programme at UWI. He has also worked in the POS Hospital Eye Clinic for over five years, helping to reorganise and install new methods to improve the service to the people. He has worked both here and in the UK in his profession, spending over 40 years working and administering in the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, lecturing and training undergrads and post-grads in optometry. He has also worked in the private sector being in charge of over 2000 people and gaining invaluable experience in health and education delivery in a developed country. Bose also spent over 15 years as an executive member (Finance Director) of the Commission for Racial Equality of the UK. He has also played pan, tassa, cricket, football and table tennis here, cricket in England and rugby at Cardiff University. Bose is also a fully trained and licensed Sanatanist Hindu Pandit (priest) resident at the Gayatri Mandir (church) at the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) headquarters in St. Augustine, and is also an executive member of the SDMS. As a Pandit, he is involved in numerous social work programmes throughout the country, particularly with the youth and socially deprived, and his his own radio family programme (Parivaar) which reaches out to the young. He was also a member of the Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) where he represented the SDMS. The PNM believes that Bose is the embodiment of our Vision 2020 philosophy that advocates equal opportunities for personal growth, self-expression, enjoyment of life and participation in the development process. Junia Regrello is currently an Alderman in the San Fernando Borough Council. Junia recognizes the value of culture and the arts in the social, cultural and economic development of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
